Car Insurance for 17 year old Drivers
Getting Cheaper Cover for the Youngest Drivers
Car insurance for 17 year olds can be a real headache
in terms of cost. So the main question is - should you go on your parents
insurance or buy your own car and have your own named policy?
Our advice would be to buy your own car (a really dirt cheap one), or maybe get someone to buy
one for you if you're fortunate, and get your own policy.
The fact is that your car insurance premiums won't come down significantly
until you reach the golden age of 25. If you start your own policy now,
at 17, you could have a maximum full no claims bonus (NCB) under your belt
when you reach the car insurers preferred age (basically being seen as a
much better risk at age 25).

What type of cover
is best for you?
This is not a straight forward question as everyones circumstances can and
do vary. You should make a full list of what aspects of car insurance cover
you actually need. You must ask the right questions to get the right cover
and policy for you - it is very subjective.
There are some aspects that you can generalise on that won't necessarily
affect the level of cover. You can make some assumptions that will save
you a lot of time in searching for the best (by best we mean the cheapest
on this occasion).
Cheapest isn't always the best I hear you cry. We wouuld would agree with
that statement but a recent survey found the following when they asked "What
is the single most important factor in choosing an insurer"? the results
were -
We provide our service for the sole purpose of finding you the cheapest
car insurance around.
Assuming you are young driver, or a learner driver, and driving an inexpensive
first car, you will probably find the cost of comprehensive motor insurance
very high (an example would be a 17 year-old living in a major city, buys
a second-hand car for £500. The cost of a comprehensive policy could be
as high as £2,200 or more).
The cost of a Third Party Cover policy could reduce that figure to somewhere
around £1,200. So, the saving of £1000 on the annual car insurance policy
is more than the nvalue of the car. You may as well get the basic cover
and build up your NCB as cheaply as you can.
